Dan DeBruno, founder of Geeks With Wheels.
Before founding Geek With Wheels, I had a knack for blowing electronic stuff up in my bedroom at my parents house as a kid. My Father would just say “I’m not replacing that, you’re going to have to figure out how to fix it yourself”. After many years of this and several trips to Radio Shack with my allowance I became quite effective at building and repairing analog electronics devices. This took me on into high school and the study of electronics and digital electronics. Through high school a small team and myself were able to build a small computing device from scratch which we now refer to as a PC. Although, this was just a very elaborate calculator that we were able to write software for to do word processing and various other stuff. I did also spend a lot of time surfing through High School to hide my geekiness from my friends…you know how tough friends can be on you…
Out of high school I started working for a power supply manufacturer while doing course work at Moorpark College in Computer Science. It was here I develop a liking for service. I became the service and support manager shortly after starting. After a year or so I moved onto Shamrock computers when the PC revolution started to become a thing. They brought me in as a telephone technical support rep for the hard disk drive division. (believe it or not the largest hard drive I supported at that time was 60 MegaBytes…whewww thats big). This was the start of my life long career in the hard disk drive industry.
After Shamrock Computers I was recruited my Micropolis Corporation. I moved into technical support management and application engineer at Micropolis. In these 9 years with Micropolis I was a member on the teams that brought the first consumer available RAID 5 disk drive sub-system to market allowing for disk drive redundancy based off the theory of the Berkley Papers. We then developed what we know now as a DVR “Digital Video Recorder” early on and progressed that technology into VOD “Video on Demand” using hard disk array sub-systems.
The head engineers of Micropolis moved on to start Medea Corp. and recruited me over to be the Support Manager and Test Engineer Manager. We developed a technology that used IDE drives in Disk Arrays to enhance performance to the level that could be used with real time audio and video for non-linear editing. By using IDE drives we kept the cost low and made the products affordable to audio and video editors across the board. This Brought attention to us so much that AVID (that biggest player in the Audio Video hardware industry) ended up purchasing Medea Corporation…Now I was with AVID. I ran support for the west coast on all their core Media Composer product lines and Storage Sub-Systems.
Since AVID I have been with others in this industry in the capacity of Support Manager to Technical Sales and in-between with Maxon Computers, iQstor, GB Labs and mLogic…
I have been a resident of the Ventura County my whole life. Born in Thousand Oaks and reside in Simi Valley with my wife and 3 boys. In my free time I am found out either going to the movies with my wife, having Ice Cream or coffee at a local shop, playing golf or surfing.
